Broken Roads is a classic-style RPG developed by Drop Bear Bytes which is currently available on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. It’s set in post-apocalyptic Western Australia with real-world locations such as Brookton, Kokeby, and Kalgoorlie. It’s played from an isometric point-and-click view with a heavy focus on narrative, morals, and philosophy, utilizing a mechanic called the Moral Compass.

The Moral Compass determines where the player’s world view leans philosophically, which can influence dialogue choices, character interactions, and create butterfly effects throughout the story, occasionally throwing the player into morally grey dilemmas.

I worked as Level Designer on Broken Roads, and while that was my title for my entire time on the project, I worked on many different aspects of the game.

My responsibilities included:

  • Designing in-game areas from the ground up

  • Structuring levels based on narrative and environment design

  • Set dressing and level polish

  • Setting up combat encounters and arenas

  • Integrating narrative elements using articy:draft 3

  • Importing art assets into Unity

  • Quality Assurance

  • Bug fixing
